Frequently asked questions

What is new?

The new system for presenting statistical indicators (only banking statistics at the present time) is oriented on a specialist user.

The statistical information system allows the user to
 Look at the default formats of any table/series (HTML);
 The period (and the step) for the time series can be determined by the user. Besides the beginning and the end of the time series (month,year), by regular data the user can choose a suitable step (end-month, end-quarter, year-end figures);
 Look at, download or order by e-mail a table/time series. The format used for downloading is CSV (Comma Separated Values). That should be compatible with most spreadsheet packages our users work with (MS Excel, Access etc);
 Look at, download or order by e-mail the data in XLS format;
 Look at comments, definitions, information on the statistical methods used, release calendars etc.

Can I put a standing order to always receive a table by mail as soon as it has been changed?

At the present time no regular automatic forwarding of tables takes place but it is possible to provide this service if there is sufficient interest in it. Please indicate your exact requirements on the feedback form.

Downloading the tables

The easiest way to download (a HTML table!) is File and Save As.
But probably you are not interested in HTML but a format suitable for your spreadsheet. Copy/Paste can often be the most handy way to download smaller tables. But that option is not available fo Netscape users.

Downloading CSV (Comma Separated Values) files or ordering the CSV files by mail is the option to use for larger tables. The system offers (attempts to offer) a name for the table to be downloaded (identical to the table heading, with a csv extention) but the results depend on the browser used and its version.

The users of Internet Explorer must save the file themselves (Save As). Some versions of Internet Explorer, eg. 4.0 only allow for text files (txt) and HTML as options when saving files. In that case the file must be saved as a text file (Save as Type - txt) and later the txt extention must be manually replaced by csv

Netscape offers the Save as option. A csv extention must be manually added to the file name here, as well.

The CSV file does not open correctly under my Excel, all the rows have only one column!?

Regrettably, the CSV format is not exactly the same for all countries. In most cases, it is a comma separated format (as indicated by its name). If Estonian has been chosen for the language in the settings of the user's computer, Microsoft has opted for the semi-colon (;) as a separator. Knowing that, the present system attempts to from a file with semi-colons (;) for separators for users of Estonian-language tables. Commas (,) are used in all other cases. If the regional settings for Windows in the user's computer have not been customized, the file containing semi-colons will not open correctly under Excel.

The regional settings for Windows can be found in the Start-menu, Settings, Control Panel, Regional Settings, panel Regional Settings - option Estonian.

Of course, it is also possible to opt for the English CSV version of a table - starting from here.

The XLS file does not open correctly under my Excel or Access!?

The Excel format tables generated by the system can cause some problems, regrettably.
 Selecting a longer data series you may receive an error note "java.lang.Exception: File is very large! Please, change conditions!" In this case the time series is too long - please select a shorter period or use the CSV format.
 Access is not able to open the Excel files generated by the system - please use the CSV format for downloading the data.
