Eesti Pank publishes monthly statistics on monetary financial institutions
(MFI) that is compiled according to the rules of the European Central Bank (ECB).
MFIs are financial institutions that accept deposits from the general public
or issue close substitutes to deposits and grant credit and/or invest in securities.
The complete list of MFIs in the European Union is published on the ECB's website.
The list is updated on a daily basis by members of the European System of Central
Banks, including Eesti Pank. In Estonia MFIs include Eesti Pank, credit institutions,
savings and loan associations and money market funds. The balance sheet of MFIs
is presented by the type of financial instruments, broken down by maturity,
counterparty institutional sector and residency. The balance sheet of MFIs forms
the basis for the compilation of monetary and credit aggregates. Monetary aggregates
describe the amount of cash and other liquid asstes in the economy having impact
on the general price level. The monetary and credit aggregates of Estonia are
in line with the ECB's appropriate methodology.
