Pursuant to the Bank of Estonia Act, Eesti Pank has the right and obligation to collect financial and economic statistics needed for performing its tasks. These data are used in monetary policy analysis, for the assessment of the developments and risks of the financial sector and Estonian foreign trade. Eesti Pank compiles Estonia's balance of payments and international investment position. The central bank is also responsible for the availability of internationally comparable monetary and financial statistics. Eesti Pank considers it very important that the collected data and consolidated figures be available to the public.

Regarding monetary and financial statistics, credit institutions' data and data presented by the leasing companies, which are members of the Estonian Leasing Association, are collected and published. Eesti Pank collects data of credit institutions as provided by the Bank of Estonia Act and the Official Statistics Act. The exchange of data with leasing companies is based on a co-operation agreement signed in 1997.

The acts mentioned above also regulate the collection of financial and economic statistics for the balance of payments and international investment position. First and foremost, the statistical indicators are published on the web site of Eesti Pank. Data release calendars can also be found here. The credit institutions' and leasing companies' statistics as well as the balance of payments statement and international investment position are available as time series.

In assembling and using statistics Eesti Pank collaborates with other data collecting state institutions (the Financial Supervision Authority, Statistical Office and Ministry of Finance etc.). One of the aims of collaboration is to avoid multiple collection of the same data and to minimise the reporting load.

To ensure international comparability of the published statistics, international standards and recommendations by the European Central Bank, European Commission, International Monetary Fund and other institutions are considered when developing the data collection methods, collecting and publishing consolidated data.

The central bank proceeds from the principle provided in the Official Statistics Act that the data of individual reporting institutions are not made public without their permission.
