In an independent and impartial manner, the European Ombudsman investigates complaints about maladministration in the institutions and bodies of the European Union.

The Ombudsman is elected by the European Parliament for a five-year term (eligible for reappointment), which corresponds to the Parliament's term of office.

Since the citizens of all Member States are, at the same time, the citizens of Europe, they have the right to appeal to the Ombudsman when they feel that an institution or a body of the EU has due to its unsatisfactory work been unjust to them.
